In part one of kitchen renovation LeAnne Bunnell, principal of elle design, set out to address the functional requirements of this kitchen. This time let’s get to the pretty part.
Our challenge was staying true to the homes’ style while incorporating the homeowners’ love of modern design.
We set out to create a style mix using traditional elements with an up to date approach. By combining traditional detailing with modern finishes and a muted colour palate, the kitchen is now a new classic.
Rather than the usual white or cream for the perimeter cabinets, we opted for a soft grey found in the bold granite countertop chosen for the dark stained maple island. Pulling a medium tone from the same stone we elected to switch to the consistent finish of a Caesarstone solid surface for the perimeter counters. This balances the texture and sparkle of the stunning marble mosaic back splash.
Speaking of sparkle… Polished nickel pendants from Hudson Valley hang over the island, a gorgeous modern chrome Kohler bridge faucet anchors the island and polished nickel pulls and knobs round out the bling. A standout stainless steel apron front sink, from Elkay references days gone by in a current finish.
Task lighting is layered through well-placed recessed lights and hidden under cabinet halogens. In addition to the gorgeous pendants over the island, we added eye-candy with a new nook light and shiny sconces with silk shades on the fireplace wall in the adjacent family room.
~Don’t eliminate finishes or details just because they are outside your style. Adding a few unexpected elements makes your space more dynamic.
~Choose one strong element to showcase; then select finishes to support and complement
~Mixing finishes in a small space can be tricky. It’s a fine line between interesting and over doing it. Keep a consistent thread through your selections.
I know that the homeowner’s parties and dinners have always been dynamic and truly special, but now the surroundings match the sparkle and shine of the family that hosts these exciting evenings.
